Constipation & Nutrition

Constipation is a widespread epidemic with some people only having a bowel movement as infrequently as once a week. A healthy bowel should be cleared at least once if not twice a day. If this does not happen then toxins that should be eliminated from the body, simply hang around and are eventually reabsorbed. Although uncomfortable, constipation itself is not particularly dangerous, however, it can be the forerunner to much more serious conditions such as bowel cancer. There are many causes of constipation with dehydration being the most common. Other factors include;

  • Consumption of less than 1.5 – 2 litres of water per day
  • Low fibre diet
  • Dysbiosis (imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut)
  • Mineral deficiencies
  • Consumption of processed/refined foods, and wheat.
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Not allowing enough time to have a bowel movement or ignoring the urge.
  • Stress
  • Under active Thyroid

Good nutrition and some basic lifestyle changes can have a very powerful effect on constipation and really get things moving quickly.
